Publication event: new information on the history of the Finland-Namibia relationship

The Finnish Literature Society has published Colonial Aspects of Finnish-Namibian Relations, 1870-1990: Cultural Change, Endurance and Resistance. Edited by Leila Koivunen and Raita Merivirta, this peer-reviewed collection addresses the colonial aspects of the historical relationship between the two countries. The authors are from Finland, Namibia and South Africa. The massive appendix to the volume is a bibliography of texts on the Finland-Namibia relationship by Joel Kuortti, Oshigwana Hashi Lesha A Bibliography of 150 Years of Writing on Namibia. The bibliography contains about 2000 titles. The compilation and its appendix are freely available in electronic format (see links below). The printed book can also be purchased from the SKS online shop.

Joel Kuortti: Oshigwana Hashi Lesha. A Bibliography of 150 Years of Writing on Namibia (SKS)

The editors and authors will present the collection and bibliography at a publication event on Thursday 22 August 2024 at 4:00-6:00 pm (EEST). The event will be held at the Finnish Literature Society’s Ballroom in Helsinki (Hallituskatu 1, 2nd floor). 

The event is open to all interested parties and no advance registration is required. The event can also be followed remotely. The link can be obtained by registering as a participant in Zoom.

NOTE! The publication event will be mainly in Finnish. On Tuesday 27 August 2024, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm (EEST), an English-only presentation will take place via Zoom.

As a follow-up to the publication event, the Embassy of Namibia in Helsinki and the Finland-Namibia-Society will organise a Namibian Heroes’ Day event in the same venue from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

The publication event will be mainly in Finnish. Researchers working in Namibia and South Africa will present their own research in English via remote access.
