Historians without Borders’ History in Exile project has brought together Russian historians living in different European countries to discuss Russian history, memory politics and the responsible use of history in situations of conflict and displacement.
During 2024–2026, the project has created spaces for dialogue among historians and supported the development of public history materials that bring historical research and new perspectives to wider audiences. It has also explored how historical narratives can contribute to cooperation, conflict mitigation and responsible international relations—and how historians working in exile can continue to participate in scholarly and public debate.
The Copenhagen event marks the concluding phase of the project. It brings together project participants, historians and Nordic stakeholders to discuss what has been learned through History in Exile and what the experiences of historians in exile reveal about historical knowledge, memory politics and academic freedom in Europe today.
