Erkki Tuomioja, Chairman of Historians without Borders in Finland, met with historians and representatives of the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR) in Nicosia on 5 March 2024.

AHDR is an organisation established in Nicosia in 2003 to promote general historical awareness, especially among children, young people and teachers in Cyprus, and to develop learning opportunities for all, taking into account learners’ different abilities, ethnicities, religious beliefs, cultural and social backgrounds. The organisation maintains a continuous and open dialogue on pedagogical practices that promote the values of the discipline of history, respect for diversity and dialogue on history. AHDR’s members come from a wide range of ethnic, linguistic and professional backgrounds, working at different educational levels in Cyprus.

Chairman Tuomioja visited Nicosia, Cyprus, to mark the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force In Cyprus (UNFICYP). Mr Tuomioja spoke at a seminar on UNFICYP’s history and Finnish peace mediation efforts organised by the Embassy of Finland in Nicosia, where he stressed the importance of history and the role of women in sustainable conflict resolution. UNFICYP was established in Cyprus on 4 March 1964 by a decision of the UN Security Council.

We thank our Nicosia colleagues for the interesting discussions and wish them good luck and success in the future endeavours of the AHDR! We would also like to thank the Embassy of Finland in Nicosia for organising this important seminar.
