How do debates about memory and history so often turn into debates about politics? How does their polarisation contribute to right-wing extremism and our understanding of the past?
The Peace Education Institute in Finland (Rauhankasvatusinstituutti ry) is pleased to invite you to the international seminar “Contemporary Debates on Memory, History and Colonialism in Finland and Romania” in Helsinki, where our esteemed guests will discuss how memory and history – including complicated legacies of colonialism – continue to play an increasingly important role in contemporary politics and how their debates have evolved throughout the 20th century until today in Finland and Romania.
The speakers at the event include Erkki Tuomioja (Historians without Borders in Finland), Dana Dolghin (PATRIR) and Robert Trygg (RKI).
The seminar will cover topics such as the significance of historical memory in political debates, right-wing extremism, colonialism, developments in contemporary history debates in Finland and Romania, Finland in the 20th century and much more, including how debates of such topics have evolved and continue to evolve in the 21st century. We would like to encourage active participation regardless of your background, so anyone interested in such topics is welcome to join us in the discussion on how to tackle such issues in today’s society.
The event will take place on November 21st from 3 PM to 5 PM at Globaalikeskus, Siltasaarenkatu 4 (7th floor).
Coffee and snacks will be served at the venue. Please note that the event will be conducted in English.
