An online discussion featuring Professor Ilan Pappé

Monday, 5 October 2026, 18:00–19:30 Helsinki time / 16:00–17:30 UK time
Online event
Language: English

How can historians engage with the history of Israel and Palestine in ways that deepen our understanding of the conflict and contribute to the search for a just and sustainable future?

Historical narratives and interpretations of the past play an important role in shaping how the Israeli–Palestinian conflict is understood and discussed. Competing accounts of displacement, statehood, violence, memory and responsibility continue to influence public debate, political action and visions of the future.

This online event, organised by the international network of Historians without Borders and Historians without Borders in Finland, will examine the role of history in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and consider how historical research and responsible engagement with contested pasts can contribute to a deeper understanding of the conflict, its development and the possibilities for its future.

Professor Ilan Pappé will deliver the keynote address. His presentation will be followed by commentaries from Professor Hannu Juusola, Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Helsinki, and Dr Alice Baroni, Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Turku. The event will then continue with a discussion between the speakers and the online audience.

The event will be opened by Erkki Tuomioja, Chair of Historians without Borders.
