Concerning Violence: Frantz Fanon & the philosophy of decolonisation

Welcome to the joint screening and discussion event of the Historians without Borders' Colonialism Working Group, Tutkijaliitto and Cinema Orion on Monday 18.3.2024! We will watch Göran Olsson's documentary Concerning Violence and reflect on the historical and contemporary meanings attached to Frantz Fanon's philosophy.

Concerning Violence is a 2014 documentary film written and directed by Göran Olsson. Using unique archival footage, the film tells the story of the African anti-colonial movements of the 1960s and 1970s.

The film is based on the essay De la violence (On Violence) by philosopher and psychiatrist Frantz Fanon, from his 1961 book Les damnés de la terre (The Wretched of the Earth). Frantz Fanon (1925-1961) was a psychiatrist born in Martinique and educated in France, whose thought has had a wide influence on anti-colonial and feminist movements as well as on post-colonial studies. Fanon’s work focuses in particular on the psychological effects of colonisation and the possibilities for liberation. Fanon worked in an Algerian hospital during the Algerian-French war and died of cancer in 1961, aged only 36.

The languages of the film are English, French, Swedish and Portuguese and the film is presented with English subtitles. The film is narrated by American singer and actress Lauryn Hill.

The film has a running time of 1 h 25 min.
