Welcome to the screening and talk organized by the working group on colonialism within Historians without Borders and Cinema Orion in Helsinki on Tuesday November 12. The screening of the documentary No Other Land (2024) will be followed by a discussion on the history of Finland's policy towards Israel and Palestine. The evening is the second part of a two-part series of events.
NO OTHER LAND: For half a decade, Palestinian activist Basel Adra has described how the Israeli occupation is destroying his community, Masafer Yatta, while forging an unlikely alliance with an Israeli journalist who wants to join his struggle.
The languages of the film are Arabic, Hebrew and English and the subtitles are in English. The film has a running time of 1 h 35 min.
After the film, a panel discussion will reflect on Finnish Israel and Palestine policy. The panel discussion will feature, among others, Professor Hannu Juusola and Postdoctoral Researcher Tiina Järvi. The discussion will be moderated by Erkki Tuomioja, the Chairman of Historians without Borders and will be held in Finnish.
The screening is the second part of a two-part series of events, the first of which on 29 October will include a screening of The Time that Remains (2009) by Elia Suleiman and a discussion on the history of Palestine and Israel and their relations in the light of colonialism. Panelists:
Hannu Juusola is Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Helsinki and Head of the Department of Cultures. He has previously worked as Director of the Finnish Institute in the Middle East. One of his areas of expertise is the Israel/Palestine conflict. His revised and expanded History of Israel will be published in October.
Tiina Järvi (PhD) is a social anthropologist specializing in Lebanon and Palestinian refugees. Her research focuses on the daily lives of Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon, the West Bank and Jordan, as well as on state-building and decolonisation in Israel. Lake’s current research project looks at life in crisis in Lebanon. Järvi has also written several general texts on Palestinian/Israeli history and contemporary conditions.
Erkki Tuomioja is an Associate Professor of Political History, former Member of Parliament and the longest serving Foreign Minister in Finnish history, and President of the Association of Historians without Borders in Finland since its foundation in 2015. Tuomioja is the author of more than 20 books on history and current social issues.
